Revival of Love: Psonnets and Other Poems of Life, Love, and the Lord

The Other Poems
And She Shall Find a Table

I offer up my broken heart
and pray the Lord restore its walls
and garnish it with works of art,
with loving songs and madrigals.

Then I shall wear the signet ring,
though once I was a prodigal,
and praise and worship shall I sing
because I heard my Father's call.

And also in my Father's house,
there lives a daughter set aside
to live with me and be my spouse,
and I shall bless her as my bride.

And she shall find a table made
and honey with the honeycomb,
for pleasant sayings may persuade
her how my heart may be her home.

My heart was broken when I sought
the worldly pleasures and pursuits
that my inheritance had bought
when I had left my home and roots.

The gifts my Father gave this one
were wasted on adultery,
but for my life, He gave His Son,
and for my sins, a psaltery.

For in the famine of that land,
I thought of all His servants' store,
the bread and wine they had at hand
and anything they needed more.

And she shall find a table dressed
with fattened calf and fruit and more
and shall feel seven times more blessed
because I kept my heart for her.

Then when I came to offer up
myself to serve on His behalf,
my Father bade me sit and sup
and slew for me the fattened calf.

And at that table sat the Groom,
the One my Father sent to die,
and He prepares for me a room.
I am the apple of His eye.

And when I think why He forgives,
why Jesus came for me and died,
it is for love, and now He lives,
and I shall live and be His Bride.

And she shall find a table there,
one cup of wine and broken bread,
and know she is my answered prayer,
the woman whom I want to wed.
