When I was saved, was I like one who dreams
that Jesus Christ redeemed me from the curse
of which I wrote in poems worse and worse?
And when I write for Jesus Christ, redeem
the time, and craft my poems with a scheme
of rhymes and rhythms so I might rehearse
the covenant of Jesus Christ with verse,
have I this talent for no other themes?
I have this talent for this awful art
because I fill with awe before His Word,
and so I write my sonnets sweet and tart
and swift and terrible, for I have heard
the very Word, which lives within my heart,
and for this cause, my spirit has been stirred.
