You Were Born and Born Again

I wish I could be there to celebrate
the day that you were born, because your birth
has given me a cause for joy and mirth.
You are my friend. I think of you of late
to reconsider each God-given trait
that I have found distinguishes your worth
from any other person's on the earth,
far more than any could enumerate.
But I know that the cake that we would eat,
its candles burning brightly, year for year,
would testify again that you are sweet,
a light unto the world God wanted here
when you were born and born again, complete
in Jesus Christ, whose heart you also cheer.
