What artisan shall bake or brew with yeast
this bread and wine, which cost a widow's mite?
Slake these our thirst? Sate these our appetite?
Yet these are greatest, which are counted least,
after both blessed and broken by our priest
and live within us by the faith, not sight,
of Jesus Christ, our Sacrifice, our Rite,
our Common Table, our Agapefeast.
No honey, meat, or spices dress our bread.
Fruits ripe and aged in oak are not the best.
A cross of cedar, where Christ suffered, bled,
and died await our appetite's protest
till freely, faithfully, and fully fed
this bread and wine. Christ Jesus is the rest.
