I opened up my eyes, and thought of you,
and closed my eyes again so I could pray
a prayer for you, and so began my day
with fervent prayer, although my words were few.
My eyes are open now. The day is new,
and wherever I walk, or work, or stay
may be the house, the vineyard, or the way
where I will meet my ewe. I pray this, too.
So when I close my eyes tonight in prayer,
and pray God gives me, His belov'ed, sleep,
and do not worry who you are, or where,
it is because the Shepherd counts the sheep.
The little lamb I long to love is there,
but I will sleep, as Adam's sleep was deep.
