I dream about you often, happy dreams,
if only for a moment you are there,
a lucid thought no firmer than the air.
But when I wake, behold, it is a dream,
and every word and touch we shared now seem
as empty as a phantom unaware
about how much I think of you and care
and hope that I shall dream of better themes.
I think of one such theme, that in the night,
the Lord by voice or angel bid me go
and find out where you are by morning light
so, when you have awakened, you shall know
how dear I hold our friendship and the sight
of you, my friend, which dreams cannot bestow.
