The sirens sounded. Firefighters came
and burned with duty in their faces when
these warriors, who do not fight with men,
so fought the furies of the elemental flames
with honor, sacrifice, and courage. May their names
be written in the Book of Life, that then
this brotherhood, which few have entered in,
may stand together when Christ comes for them.
There is a place where flames cannot be quenched,
yet sinners must be saved from there as well,
so when I witness victims who were wrenched
from earthly flames by heroes, tales they tell
make me repent of times when I have flinched
to charge into the very gates of hell.
