Now let us fast, my love, a little while
because, if we with loves too often feast,
we may love love, but love our Lord the least.
But let us not abstain for long, lest guile
should enter in and tempt us to defile
the marriage bed the Lord wants to increase.
So may our loves and passions mix with peace
when we repent of sins and reconcile.
I want our cares on Jesus to be cast
when we shall suffer hunger pangs and thirst.
Thus have I sought occasion for a fast.
But be encouraged if you think the worst.
I do not fast because I love you last.
I fast because Christ Jesus loves you first.
