My Lenten table lovingly is laid
for forty days of feasting, time well spent,
because I give up fasting with this Lent.
Spread bread with butter, jam, and marmalade!
Serve meats with gravy, sauce, and marinade!
And if I tithe my cumin, rue, and mint,
then I confess: I eat ninety percent
and wash it down with lots of lemonade!
Partake of toasted bread, and roasted beast,
and wine, and milk and honey in your cup,
and give up fasting fast! Come to my feast
where Jesus Christ is loved and lifted up!
He stands before your door and knocks. At least
He enters, not to fast with you, but sup!
