Yes, happy birthday! How the sons of Job
and daughters of that great man of the east
were slaughtered by a tempest at their feast!
Yes, happy birthday! Herod hath bestowed
the head of John the Baptist a la mode
to Salome on his birthday, at least!
Is there prepared for me a fattened beast,
a prodigal who wears our Father's robe?
Elijah asked the starving for a cake,
so now I ask a little cake from thee
lit by another candle, for God's sake,
that for another year, then, I may be
God's gift to thee, albeit my age ache,
as thou hast been God's goodly gift to me!
