I lay thee down, my love, yet have I lain
with thee as we might lie? Yea, could I say
I love thee for one night, then go my way?
Yea, so I could, and lie with thee thy swain,
yet could I be one flesh with thee and twain?
I could not; thus, I lay thee down, and pray,
and seek thee in my prayers, and neither prey,
nor lie to thee, nor lie with thee in vain.
I will not lie with thee, my love, and lie,
though I would love and covet every touch,
because I would not love thee, nor could I,
nor should I, if my love should be as such
to lie with thee, and leave thee by and by,
and love thee little, though I hold thee much.
