Revival of Love: Psonnets and Other Poems of Life, Love, and the Lord

Psonnets of Courtship
I Want to Have a Child

I want to have a child, and call his name,
and hear the pitter patter of her feet
when he runs to the father she will greet.
But though I want to marry you, you claim
you do not want a child. Now will I blame
you if our memories turn bittersweet
and if our friendship still feels incomplete?
I will not since I love you all the same.
We may not wed, but will I love you less?
You were my friend today and yesterday
and will, God willing, come tomorrow, bless
me with your friendship, though no children play
with me, still living and still fatherless,
when we hold hands together, old and gray.
