I rather would forgive a sinful lass
than think my virtue, righteousness, and worth
would win the purest virgin on the earth.
For this I know. My goodness cannot bless
her days with love and joy and peacefulness,
but only trouble her in home and hearth
if I forget that I am flesh by birth,
and trust alone in my own righteousness.
For God's own goodness leads us to repent,
so let me meet a lass I can forgive
who shall forgive my sins. For Christ was sent
to die for us so we might truly live
in love our weaknesses cannot prevent
and all our sinfulness could never give.
