I gather up a life of poetry
and lay it on the altar set aflame
and sacrifice my words unto Thy Name,
but written is a more sure word of prophecy,
Thy Word, which is established everlastingly.
I pray my words with Thy Word be the same,
without which all my poems lie here lame,
burnt wood and hay and stubble unto Thee.
Then may I be Thy ready writer with my pen
and pray my readers learn I have referred
unto Thy Word, and not the will of men,
Thy Word, and not a fable I have heard,
Thy Word, and if I must write it again,
I pray I write it rightly with Thy Word.
