I wish I had with childlike innocence
embraced you with my heart's affections pure
than had our courtship's dalliances lure
you to my chambers, absent of defense.
Yet this was why, to prove my dalliance
could wax into a lifetime and endure,
I wedded you with vows God can assure
shall last until my death and judgment thence.
For God had mercy, granting us reprieve
since childhood's celibate affections mild
had waxed beyond what friendship could relieve.
Thus, night by night, our passions, growing wild,
are sated in the bed where we conceive
lost innocence into our newborn child.
