I inwardly have shunned monastic life
because I feel that I could never bear
the solitude, the liturgies, the prayers
in which some celibate have sought relief
and through the which God bolsters their belief
that, lacking spouse and other worldly cares,
they have a stronger faith and closer share
the sufferings of Christ and bear His grief.
No cloistered abbey, monastery's walls,
nor priory's seclusion makes me want
to turn aside from God's more earthly calls
of wife and family. So I recant
within my heart's own hermitage's walls
from going where the Lord has others sent.
