What was she like before her name was Eve?
more beautiful than any lass on earth
conceived in sin and cursed before her birth?
And for that cause alone, why should I leave
my father and my mother, if I cleave
to one whose flower fades? Cast in the hearth
are thorns and thistles. Had they any worth?
But your name is not Eve, and you believe.
What were you like before you heard the name
of Jesus Christ, believed on Him, and knew
how He endured the cross, despised the shame,
and made a new and living way? For through
bone of His bones, flesh of His flesh, there came
the Body, and the Bride of Christ, and you.
