What prayers were uttered when at last I knelt
and tongues with no interpreter were prayed?
Interpret, O my love, foundations laid
as Christ was formed in you! because I felt
the Lord, on Whom my meditations dwelt,
travailing till the intercessions made
had wrought in you the faith that cannot fade
and bought for you the gold that cannot melt.
Interpret, O my love, because I yield
still further to the leadings of the Lord
and love you with the love no flesh can wield
because this love no riches can afford -
the love of Christ the Holy Spirit sealed
when you first prayed, believing on His Word.
